Check out the following link for a handy winterization checklist
Now that you’ve winterized … What to do in the winter while the boat hibernates? It is definitely a tough time for a boater, especially in the northeast. After you have winterized your boat, we tend to have some withdrawal pains that land lovers could not understand. Good time to plan for next season. Start researching marinas and yacht clubs within 1-3 hours of your home port. It is always nice to visit new places with your boat in the spring. Check out waterwayguide.com to check out other marinas information and to properly chart a trip.
Take a boaters vacation, Marinemaxvacations.com specialize in bare boat charters. Imagine going to the British Virgin Islands or Europe behind the helm of a beautiful catamaran, yacht or sailboat with your family and friends. Sounds like a dream! Of course you can hire a captain if you don’t have enough experience on larger vessels..
This cold weather is a great opportunity to take some indoor boating education classes as well http://NYBoatSchool.com has some great courses to take over the winter like the NYS BOATING AND PWC SAFETY COURSE (Boating License). Even if you have taken the course before, it is always great to get a refresher, besides you may learn something new from the instructor or the other boaters. What a great way to meet people like you … that love the water. In my Yacht Club even the seasoned boaters are buying PWC’s. If you are considering buying a PWC – Personal Water Craft (AKA Jet Ski, Waverunner, or Sea Doo) you are required to carry a NYS Boating and PWC safety Certificate. It won’t be long before all boaters are required to take this course. I promise this will help you be a better boater. I think your family is that important!
Definitely consider taking an on the water “hands on” course to improve your docking and close quarter handling skills. Remember that if you have a boat under 21 feet everyone is required to wear a PFD between November 1st and May 1st.
Look out for your local boat shows too! Maybe even going to the big shows like the International Boat Show of Miami and making a long weekend of fun!
